Across the Greater Golden Horseshoe developers and land speculators are lobbying local governments to put sprawl-style development on precious natural areas, farmland, and water sources in and around the Greenbelt.
We are the Ontario Greenbelt Alliance, a network of environmental and community groups across Ontario dedicated to protect and expand the world-famous Greenbelt. We’re doing this by pushing back against sprawl and demanding more Greenbelt-friendly sustainable communities.
Right now, many municipalities are discussing where they will build homes for future residents. Many developers want sprawl. But, more and more local community members are pushing back against sprawl and demanding more Greenbelt-friendly sustainable communities.
To help you spread the word about Greenbelt-friendly sustainable communities -especially to municipal decision-makers- we've created webinars featuring planning experts who discuss the dangers of sprawl and how to implement sustainable communities that not only create affordable housing where people want to live, but that also benefit the Greenbelt.
We've also created 4 factsheets that tell the story of why sprawl is bad and how sustainable communities are the answer to protecting the Greenbelt (while saving us money, creating affordable housing and ensuring a climate-friendly future).
The Ontario Greenbelt Alliance is a watchdog and defender of Ontario’s innovative Greenbelt. Our vision is to make the Greenbelt a valuable and permanent part of Ontario’s landscape.
Our member-based alliance works to grow the Greenbelt and safeguard it from:
The Greenbelt Alliance was instrumental in establishing the Greenbelt in the lead up to 2005, growing it in the intervening years and making it the largest permanently protected Greenbelt in the world. Its members draw attention to the issues that are affecting the Greenbelt, support communities and governments in their efforts to protect the Greenbelt for its natural and agricultural values, work together and share information on key regional issues.
We work to ensure that the integrity of Ontario's Greenbelt is not undermined by inappropriate development, poorly planned infrastructure, quarries, or other uses, while also advocating for increased protection of natural areas within the Greenbelt.
We work to grow support for an expanded Greenbelt so that the benefits of its smart planning framework can be extended to adjacent areas that are under serious and unsustainable development pressure.
The Greenbelt is a living, growing system for sustaining a healthy environment and vibrant communities.
